Cyberpunk and the World Today

Cyberpunk and the World Today
As cyberpunk was written primarily in the eighties, and early nineties, the view of technology was quite interesting to many people. The funny thing though, is that fact surpassed fiction, and the technology within these novels became something that already existed. Other then Cybernetics, and The Matrix, we have transcended this technology already. This leaves authors who were used to writing these novels in an interesting situation. Do they try continue to try and write "5 minutes into the future", or do they attempt to base it in reality. Gibsons personal decision was to write in the present tense, though many authors decide to look at technology that will hit the main market soon, and looking at the possible effects of it. I just find it quite interesting that technology expanded so quickly, that something that was supposed to be far into the future became a reality.
The Star Trek is a common example of technology transcending fiction.
